Grading and Homework Policy

BooksMrs. Saum     Language Arts 8

Homework Policy

  • Homework is a critical component of the language arts curriculum.  Students will have homework for language arts most weekdays. Homework assigned on weekends will be kept to a minimum.  Long term assignments, such as book reports and novels will be assigned over a predetermined period of time.  Working on these assignments over the weekend may be necessary.
  • Students will be well informed of assignment due dates.  Homework assignments, tests, quizzes, and projects will be posted on Google Classroom.  Students are responsible for copying the assignments into their planners.  In addition, long-term assignments will be announced and posted on Google Classroom well in advance.  Long-term projects, homework assignments, and class information will be posted on the board in the classroom, the website, and Google Classroom for students to peruse.
  • Students are responsible for adhering to deadlines.  If a homework assignment is not handed in on time, the assignment will receive half-credit.  Late work will be accepted the next day for half-credit.
  • If a student is absent, he or she is responsible for checking for missed assignments when he or she returns.  Assignments should be completed promptly.  Students will have the same amount of days to complete the missing work that they were absent.  Students should check Google Classroom for assignments.

Grading Policy

Grades will be determined by a point system.  Each homework assignment, test, quiz, project, or piece of writing will be assigned a point value.

  • Classwork/Participation will count as 10% of the final grade.
  • Most homework assignments will receive up to ten points for complete work, half credit for late work, and zero points for missing assignments.  Some homework assignments will be given a higher point value.  These assignments will be announced in advance.
  • Writing will count as 45% of the final grade.  Essays, journal entries, reports, and projects will be individually weighted and posted ahead of time.
  • Reading will count as 45% of the final grade.   Reading comprehension activities, vocabulary, and reading responses will be individually weighted and posted ahead of time.  Novel tests will be posted in advance, but reading quizzes may not be announced ahead of time.
