  1.  Time “on the hour”

1:00                Es la   una.

2:00                Son las                      dos.

3:00                Son las                      tres.

4:00                Son las                      cuatro.

5:00                Son las                      cinco.

6:00                Son las                      seis.

7:00                Son las                      siete.

8:00                Son las                      ocho.

9:00                Son las                      nueve.

10:00              Son las                      diez.

11:00              Son las                      once.

12:00              Son las                      doce.

  2.   Do I use “Es la” or “Son las” ???

All times of 1 o’clock are expressed using “Es la”.  Es la una is singular and all times other than those of 1 o’clock are expressed using “Son las” and are plural.

Es la    and Son las   make the sentences complete sentences.

 3.   Time not exactly on the hour use “y and the number after the hour” for minutes

1:05                Es la una y cinco.

2:10                Son las dos y diez.

3:15                Son las tres y quince / *Son las tres y cuarto.

                *cuarto means “quarter”, in this case “quarter after”

4:20                Son las cuatro y veinte

5:25                Son las cinco y veinticinco.

6:30                Son las seis y treinta/ *Son las seis y media.

                *media means “half”, as in “half past”

7:35                Son las siete y treinta y cinco.

8:40                Son las ocho y cuarenta.

9:45                Son las nueve y cuarenta y cinco.

10:50              Son las diez y cincuenta.

11:55              Son las once y cincuenta y cinco.

12:59              Son las doce y cincuenta y nueve.

4.   am or pm?

am      de la mañana 12:00am (midnight) -11:59am

pm     de la tarde  12:00pm (noon) -5:59pm 

pm     de la noche 6:00pm-11:59pm

5.   Using “menos” Menos means minus or less

Menos can only be used for times on the left side of the clock.  This means any time 31 minutes or more after the hour.  If menos is used, you must add 1 to the hour and subtract the number of minutes from 60 (because there are 60 minutes in one hour)

So, for 7:40...

Step One:  Is 40 greater than 30?  Yes, so "menos" can be used because it is greater than 30

Step Two:  Add 1 to the hour 7 + 1 to get 8, then

Step Three:  Subtract 60 minutes in an hour – 40 from the 7:40, so 60-40  = 20

Step Four: In Spanish, it would be Son las ocho menos veinte

                  In English words, it is 20 minutes to 8 or 20 minutes ‘til 8
