Creating a lunar cycle in four easy steps:

  • 1.        Draw and label the new moon
    •  When the moon is in this position, the lighted half is facing the Sun and the half that’s facing the Earth is totally dark.  Put the full moon opposite the new moon.
  • 2.       Decide which way the moon orbits Earth
    • Think about which way we run the bases of a baseball field.
  • 3.       Draw and label first quarter moon
    • Remember our poem:  If it’s light on the right we are waxing tonight.  If it’s light on the left we are waning at last.  Put the 3rd quarter moon opposite.
  • 4.       Now you can fill in the waxing crescent and gibbous and waning crescent and gibbous.
