Reading

Welcome to Mrs. Lento's Reading Class Website! Please visit classdojo for more frequent updates and information.

A variety of activities take place during reading in 5th grade. Please see below:

Reader's Workshop: Students are exposed to a particular reading skill through a mini-lesson. They have the opportunity to practice that skill with a self-selected, reading level appropriate, book of their choice. They record their thoughts in theirs reader's notebooks, which are submitted for a grade monthly.

Literature Circles: Students are meeting in small groups to discuss a self-selected mystery book. Students are responsible for completing the required reading and tracking their thinking in their Reader's Notebooks. Grade for discussion is based on: being prepared, tracking thoughts, taking turns speaking, staying on-task, adding to discussion, and referencing the text.

WORD STUDY:
Our Word Study program will incorporate 21st century skills, using www.spellingcity.com.   Students will complete daily assignments through their own accounts on this site.  Word lists are comprised of pattern words and content area vocabulary.  Each list will be a 2 week study in which they take a spelling test the first week, and a vocabulary test the second.

Resume Writing Practice:    If students have saved their writing practice activity, to reload their saved work on www.spellingcity.com, they MUST click the Resume Writing Practice link in their Toolbox. If they restart the activity, their saved work will be overwritten. On the apps, when they select the list and the writing practice activity, they can resume their work by clicking the Resume option.

Test Folders:
Test Folders go home around the 15th & 30th each month. Please sign and return the following day. If there are any "0's" in the folder, please make sure your child does the assignment and hands them in for a late grade.   The number of papers that are in the folder are marked on the signature sheet.

Missing/Late Assignments:
After 3 late and/or missing assignments a note will go home and will need to be signed by a parent.  A notation will be made on the note if the assignment was handed in late or was never handed in.
