Tactile Activities

3/18/2020

Tactile activities are excellent ways to help develop fine motor and visual motor skills.  Using different mediums (e.g. theraputty, slime,  playdough, floam, etc) throughout the week with handwriting or fine motor play will help your child not only stay busy, but help refine tactile skills.  This past Monday night, we made green playdough with glitter.  Homemade playdough is super easy and lasts a long time.  As a bonus, it does not dry out or crumble compared to store bought playdough.  You probably have the majority of the ingredients in your cupboard!  Here is the recipe I modified from the website www.heartnaptime.net

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)
  • (Optional food coloring and glitter)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Stir together the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large pot. Next add the water and oil. If you’re only making one color, stir in the the color now.  I added green for Saint Patrick's Day.
  • Cook over medium-heat, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough has thickened and begins to form into a ball. Remove from heat and then place inside a bowl, gallon sized bag or onto wax paper.
  • Allow to cool slightly and then knead until smooth.  If you would like to add a scent such as vanilla or peppermint extract you can add it now.  You can also add glitter now. Once it’s all mixed together, you’re ready to PLAY.
  • Store the play dough inside the bags to keep soft.

Please see the fun activities we did with our new playdough!
