Mt. Horeb School

 

Welcome to Mt. Horeb and to my Kindergarten Class! This will be a wonderful year of new beginnings and new adventures. We will learn, grow and build friendships. We will also spend much time fostering social and emotional learning. Thank you for sharing your children with me and entrusting me with their growth!

This week we  will work on the following:

Math-composing and decomposing teen numbers. Making addition sentences with 10 and then some more. We will finish in our math books and then play different games that put these skills to use. Practicing addition, subtraction and number sense in a fun and engaging way also helps reinforce these skills.

 

In Being a Writer we will work on persuasive writing. We will hear poetry that tries to convince us of thinking or feeling a certain way about something. Then we will write our own persuasive writing.  Last week we heard a poem called Alligators won't Make Good Pets. This week we will brainstorm a list of other animals that won't make good pets. We will list reasons why and then write our own poems about it.

 

We have finished our Being a Reader Program. Now we will read some other big books and practice some of the strategies we've learned and some new ones such as: when coming to a word you don't know, look at the beginning sound, the picture and ask yourself what would make sense?

 

Handwriting: review of all lowercase letters.

 

 

Heggerty Phonics- We will: supply rhyming words, listening for beginning sounds in words, listening for ending sounds in words, taking away the medial sound to see what word is left, changing the beginning sound from one sound to another to change the word, counting syllables, repeating a sentence and counting the number of words.

 

 

In Science, we will continue learning about plants and living things.

Social studies: We will learn about Memorial Day
