October 6-10
Welcome to Mt. Horeb and to our Kindergarten Class! This will be a wonderful year of new beginnings and new adventures. We will learn, grow and build friendships. We will also spend much time fostering social and emotional learning. Thank you for sharing your children with us and entrusting us with their growth!

This week we will work on the following:
Math-recognizing and counting numbers 0-5 and comparing numbers 0-5
In Being a Writer -This is our formal writing program. The format of the program is to listen to stories, discuss the story, make a connection to the story, write about the story and finally share our writing. This week's story is Red is a Dragon. Everyone will discuss things that are all red, or all green or all a different color. Then they will write about it.
Being a Reader Program-This program is our reading program. We will work in the large group to hear stories and poems read and modeled for us. We will focus on letters, sounds and phonics. We will work on handwriiting, vocab words and high frequency words. Eventually as we get closer to December we will begin small group reading. This week the story is called Hands Can. We will discuss things our hands can do. Then Everyone will write about it. We will finish learning the sounds of the alphabet. We will learn the sounds for Z, J, Q, Y and U. We will hear the story Kippur's A-Z, sing The Ants Go Marching, recite the poem 1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive. We will also hear a poem called Way Down South.
Heggerty Phonics- This is a ten minute phonics drill that has the kids practicing listnening for sounds and manipulating words around. We will: supply rhyming words, listening for beginning sounds in words, listening for ending sounds in words, taking away the first word of a compound word to see what word is left, changing the first word of a compound word to change the word entirely., counting the number of words in a sentence.
In Science, we will learn about pumpkins and their life cycle.
