September and October Topics

This page will help you keep track of what your child is learning throughout each subject area as we progress through the school year.  Please note that these topics are flexible and based on student understanding. Therefore, some topics may be reinforced for longer or shorter amounts of time.

Math

  • Learn the routine of math class
  • Rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred

Reading

  • Unit 1: Building a classroom community and learning about the routines of reading class. Review why reading is important and the concept of genre.
  • Unit 2: Strategy development in areas like questioning, visualizing, making connections, making inferences, determining importance, summarizing, and synthesizing. Students will also increase their independent reading abilities and begin to work in small groups with teachers.

Word Study

  • Unit 1: Inflectional endings -s, -es, -ed, -ing, common syllable types, and build knowledge of syllabication strategies. Students will also become more familiar with word sorts and collecting words in their notebooks.
  • Unit 2: Polysyllabic words, prefixes, suffixes, and the "schwa." Students will also gain more knowledge about morphemic transformations, figurative language, and synonyms.

Writing

  • Unit 1: Building a classroom community and learning about the routines of writing class. Students will listen to and discuss stories, poems, nonfiction writing, stories about professional authors' reasons for writing, and explore their own identities as writers. They will generate writing ideas and practice writing freely in their notebooks.
  • Unit 2: Students will learn all about the writing process
