Role of Elementary Guidance
The elementary guidance program seeks to foster the social and emotional growth of students in an effort to help them succeed academically and personally.
Elementary counseling is preventative in nature while also addressing current problems and helping children understand themselves and others.
Activities are planned to be appropriate for students at their developmental stage. These activities are designed to facilitate healthy growth and development in social, personal and academic areas.
Small Group Programs
Small groups of students may meet to compliment academic achievement.
Lunch Buddies: Students meet informally at lunchtime to become better acquainted with one another and promote healthy social development.
Newcomer’s Club: Students new to the district will be invited to meet in this small group to facilitate healthy adjustments, address concerns and promote friendships.
Counseling Groups: These will be conducted based on the needs of students. Topics will vary and may include (but are not limited to):
- Study Skills
- Problem Solving
- Friendship
- Conflict Resolution
- School Success
- Grief and Loss
- Social Skills
Classroom Programs
Orientation: At the beginning of the year the counselor will meet with each class to introduce themselves and the counseling services available.
Whole Class Instruction: The counselor will provide classroom lessons to discuss:
- Academic Support
- Character Education
- Internet Safety
Individual Counseling
The counselor focuses on meeting the ongoing or critical individual needs of the students.
Any student can see the counselor by requesting a visit or being referred by a staff member or parent.
Counseling services are available to students, parents and staff at ALT. Parents who wish to have their children participate in counseling groups are asked to contact the guidance counselor.
