Reading-We are learning about becoming a reading community. The students are learning how to turn and talk, share with their classmates and be respectful. They are also learning to use questioning while they read so they can better understand what they read. The class is building their independent reading stamina.
Writing-Thank you for helping your child decorate their writing notebooks! In writing we are also learning how to be a writing community. The students began writing stories about their lives. During the first unit the students are taught the writing process from coming up with ideas, planning, drafting, revising and editing. Students are encouraged to write everyday.
Word Study-This year students learn about root words, prefixes and suffixed. They learn patterns in spelling and rules that help them understand new words and how to spelling them.
Science-The first unit was about our world and how it changes. The students learned that a grassy environment could have once been an ocean. Scientists find fossils that prove environments change over time.
Social Studies-Our first unit will be about being part of a community. Students will learn responsibilities of being in different communities (school, town...).
Math-Our first lesson is about rounding numbers to the tens and hundreds place. They will learn different strategies to round numbers.
