Social Studies

This week the fifth graders will be completing their digital presentations using the CANVA platform to answer the Essential Question of the unit... Did the French lose out in North America? To do so they must pull evidence from all four supporting questions. Since the students are working with a partner, they must also work to understand their partner's research as well as their own.

The Social Studies curriculum has changed this year, from the memorization of facts to the acquisition of knowledge through inquiry based learning. The units are inquiry based allowing for more research based learning and flexibility. Each unit starts with a higher level thinking question, provoking students to research and apply what they have learned in order to develop a well thought out answer to that question at the culmination of the unit.

This unit focuses on the New France. Students will first learn about The Age of Exploration to deepen their background knowledge. Students will learn that French explorers, missionaries, traders, and settlers established an important presence in North America. Students will study the explorations of Jacques Cartier and others, as France establishes New France. They will also study the development of the fur-trading industry and how that affected the relationship with the Native Americans. Next, students will learn about the collapse of the New France colony, including the French loss in the French and Indian War (also known as the Seven Years’ War). Finally, they will discuss the current cultural influences of France in America today and use their research to answer the question, “Did the French lose out in North America?”.
