OUtline for 5 paragraph essay
Use this basic outline to organize your ideas for any persuasive or literary essay:
I. Introduction
General Statement about topic
Specific Statement about topic
Background information
title and author
Thesis statement
Your main idea + your position + reasons you will provide it

Body Paragraphs --- each one starts with a topic sentence DIRECTLY FROM YOUR THESIS
II. Paragraph 2
transition plus a TOPIC SENTENCE WITH REASON #1
Must contain evidence from the text to back up your reason
Make sure you explain your evidence
III. Paragraph 3
transition plus a TOPIC SENTENCE WITH REASON #2
Must include evidence from the text
IV. Paragraph 4
transition word plus TOPIC SENTENCE WITH REASON #3
evidence from the text
V. Conclusion
refers back to thesis - does not repeat it. Sums up main point in different words.
Reminders:
remember your purpose and your audience
be careful of correct pronouns and antecedents
don't use I or YOU
reminders: do not use personal pronouns, no "I think", do not use slang, do not use abbreviations.
Thesis statement = your
answer to the question (or original idea)
+ your reasons for that idea.
