Welcome to Reach

Welcome back to ALT and to Mt. Horeb Schools!  I hope you all had a wonderful summer of relaxation and rejuvenation.

EXPLANATION OF THE REACH AND INNOVATION & DESIGN PROGRAMS

The Reach program includes several components, and I look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night to explain these.  I suggest looking at the attached Getting to Know the Reach Program for an overview of the Reach programs and how they affect students at each grade level.

Math Compacting.  Grades one through five participate in Math Compacting.  Through this program, students who demonstrate mastery of Math concepts before they are taught, based on a pre-test, receive math enrichment lessons with me through the Reach program.  Identified students may also have projects to work on in their classrooms that provide an appropriate challenge. Pre-tests for Math Compacting are given before the chapters are taught, and the population of compactors changes throughout the school year based on these pre-tests.

Innovation & Design is another program offered through the Reach program. Students in grades Kindergarten through five will participate in units that promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning, and focus on 21st Century skills including creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, communication, and collaboration.

Reach, TOO! is a pull-out program available to identified students in grades three through five.  Based upon a rubric measuring several criteria, students who qualify for the program have two classes per week with me.  Through this program, students who are highly motivated and thrive on academic challenge meet with a small group of their peers to enrich their learning.

Continental Math League is a national math competition in which children in grades two through five have the opportunity to participate.  Meets are offered throughout the year for each of these grades, and it is a wonderful way to challenge motivated math students, as well as to stretch all students to become better math problem solvers.

I hope that this overview of the Reach program is helpful, and encourage you to visit me at Back to School Night, email me, or call me with any questions or concerns you may have.
