From the Principal's Desk

Welcome to Woodland School.

The vision of Woodland School is to provide students with a safe, positive, and nurturing atmosphere which fosters a life-long desire to learn, positive self esteem, a willingness to take risks, a creative approach to problem solving, and a sense of responsibility for others and the environment in which we live. To accomplish this mission, it requires the dedication of a skilled and caring staff, responsive children, and supportive parents. All of these components are exemplified at Woodland School which is why it has become a consistent model of a true learning community.

Woodland School is a building comprised of grades K through 5 with an enrollment of approximately 370 students and 65 staff members. The educational staff includes general education and special education teachers, a guidance counselor, several child study team members, paraprofessionals, a secretary, and several custodians. In addition, the PTO members and a cadre of parent volunteers continue to be a mainstay of support for the school itself, the staff, and the children.

The academic program at Woodland School offers a variety of opportunities for students in a positive and supportive environment. The core subjects of language arts, math, science, and social studies are emphasized and studied consistently on a daily basis. Students also take classes in art, computers, enrichment education, health, library, music, physical education, and Spanish throughout the year. Additionally, the guidance counselor and members of the child study team offer support for students in the areas of social development and study habits and teach skills for handling a variety of social/emotional issues.

The staff members at Woodland School are also extremely proud of their commitment to the development of strong character. Character education is not just a part of the school; it is an integral component of the curriculum. Staff members are keenly aware of the importance of being a "T.E.A.M." player where they teach, enforce, advocate, and model the six pillars of character – Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. The parents and community members are also continually made aware of the importance of these values and understand how vital their involvement is in developing good character. As a result, the students in Woodland School know that success and happiness depend on who people are on the inside, not on how they look or what they have. They model good character, make good decisions, and treat others fairly and with respect and dignity.

At Woodland School, we are all very enthusiastic about learning. We set high expectations and work diligently to achieve them. We all celebrate student achievement and continuous learning. We also care for, respect, and trust one another. Our school is a just place where everyone is treated fairly. As a result, morale is high and optimism is abundant.

It is truly an honor and a pleasure for me to be a part of the Woodland community.

Sincerely,
Christopher Huss
