From the Principal's Desk
Welcome! Mount Horeb School is a Pre-K through Grade 5 school with a total enrollment of approximately 320 students.
During the 2011-2012 school year, we will maintain our ongoing efforts to provide the community with the best educational program possible. Teachers continue to participate in extensive professional development programs to refine their skills in a wide variety of areas, including Smartboard applications, language arts instruction, and techniques to address the wide variety of learning styles that enter the school doors every day.
The Mount Horeb staff looks forward to working closely with the school
community during the 2011-2012 school year. This year our school theme is
“21st Century Learning Skills.” While we maintain our efforts to promote
students’ core academic programs, we will incorporate research based
practices that will provide the experiences necessary to work within an ever
changing social and technological landscape. Staff will participate in
professional development programs that will develop their skills in
modifying and delivering lessons in the areas of collaboration, technology,
critical thinking, and creativity. We look forward to providing students
challenging and exciting learning experiences.
The development of children’s social and emotional growth continues to be an
area that the entire staff emphasizes. It is essential that all adult
members of the school community, staff and parents, recognize that we are
role models for our children. We must remember that children learn through
observing us daily. In doing so, we will continue to emphasize the six
pillars of character education: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility,
Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. To further promote students’ emotional
literacy, we will continue to provide explicit instruction in conflict
resolution skills, bullying prevention strategies, and the development of
age appropriate social skills.
Through a combination of PTO gifts and private and school grants, Mount Horeb School now has 25 Smartboards. This technology is available in all classrooms in grades 1 - 5. In addition, the Computer Lab, REACH room, Music room, Spanish room, and Library each have Smartboards. Teachers will be working with a district technology team and within their grade level teams to continue to develop their skill in using this exciting technology. The school also has increased the availability of laptop computers for student use and is actively identifying ways to use technology to address individual learning styles.
The Mount Horeb School staff is eager to address the complexities associated with educating children in the 21st century. We look forward to working with parents and the surrounding community in meeting our students’ needs. We constantly challenge ourselves to engage in professional development, enhance our ability to meet children’s individual needs, and strive to differentiate instruction so all students work up to their own unique and individual abilities.
Sincerely,
William Kimmick
