Patriot's Game Info for 4th and 5th grade students

Any 4th or 5th grade ALT student with tickets to the baseball game is welcome

to sing "God Bless America" before the Patriot's play on Friday, June 7th.

They will perform on the field at 6:45 pm and then can return to sit with

 Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

All fifth grade students will take a math placement assessment on May 20 to help determine appropriate math placement for 6th grade. The test will be administered in your child’s 5th grade math class by the current math teacher. The following criteria will be used to determine math placement:

 • Fifth grade math placement exam

• Final math grade average for the first three marking periods

• Math TABs (Traits, Aptitudes, and Behaviors) checklist

• Teacher recommendation

Based on the above criteria your child’s math placement for the 2012-2013 school year will be determined by middle school staff. Prior to the end of the school year, you will be sent a placement letter from the Middle School identifying next year’s placement, in either Pre-Algebra, 6th Grade Math High, or 6th Grade Math Heterogeneous. Details of the 3 math courses and the recommendation process may be found on the District Website under 6th Grade Sequence of Math Courses Parent Presentation. Please address any questions or concerns about the placement process to your elementary principal.

On Friday, May 3^rd, the students and staff will be holding a PEP Rally. We are asking everyone to wear their ALT clothing to show their spirit.  

The entire school will celebrate the success of our Archery Program and cheer for 18 of our students in 4^th and 5^th grade will be traveling to compete in a National Tournament in Louisville,
Kentucky on May 10^th. Mr. Clark, in collaboration with the PTO, piloted the program with great success.

We will also cheer on our 3^rd, 4^th and 5^th grade students, as they prepare to begin NJASK Testing. The 5^thgrade students will begin testing the week of May 6^th; and the 3^rd
and 4^th grade students will begin the week of May 13^th.

The ALT theme for the Pep Rally will be: “Don't lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. Expect the best of yourself, and then do what is necessary to make it a reality.”

The presentation will include a review of the criteria and placement process for the three different levels of math at sixth grade in the Middle School. An explanation of the advanced math program which offers a pre-algebra class available to incoming sixth graders who meet the criteria, and will be taught by current Middle School teachers, will be given. This new math program is geared to meet the needs of the most advanced mathematics students at the Middle School.

Dear ALT Community,

It is my pleasure to announce that the visiting author for this year will be Dyanne DiSalvo-Ryan. An award winning author and illustrator, Dyanne will be visiting ALT on Earth Day, April 22nd. The timing could not be better, as the theme of many of Dyanne’s books revolve around community service and going green. We will be using her beautiful story, City Green, as a jumping off point in preparing for her visit. Inspired by another of her stories, Uncle Willie’s Soup Kitchen, we would like each student to bring in a can of soup on the day of the visit as a donation to the Somerset County Food Bank.

We are incredibly fortunate at ALT, for not only does the ALT PTO fund the author’s visit each year, but they also purchase one of the visiting author’s books for each child in the school! Dyanne will personally sign each book, so these will be tremendous keepsakes for your children. The students in kindergarten, first grade and second grade will each receive a paperback copy of City Green. The children in grades three, four, and five will each receive a paperback copy of The Sloppy Copy (a funny chapter book about the writing process).

If you are interested in purchasing additional books, you will find an order form attached to this letter. Please complete the form and return it with your payment to Mrs. Jackson in the library by April 8, 2013. Payments should be in the form of a check (no cash, please), and should be made payable to ALT PTO. Summer Bridge Activities Workbooks

This year the ALT PTO is proud to sponsor the sale of Summer Bridge Activities Workbooks. Orders are due March 22, 2013. The books will also be available for purchase in conjunction with your 4th period food days order, which runs from March 11-20th. Reading each evening will result in students being given a coupon to place in a prize bag on Fridays. Parents reading to their children may also count as reading time. Dear Parents and Guardians:
The mass school shooting in Connecticut, at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, is a true tragedy. As a result, I am sure that over the weekend your family time has become that much more precious. Below are some strategies you may consider using to better prepare yourself in speaking with your children about this tragedy.
1. Talk honestly about the incident without using graphic detail and share some of your feelings about it. It is important that students feel informed.
2. Encourage your child to tell you about their concerns and express their feelings. Validate their feelings and concerns.
3. Limit television viewing. It can be difficult for children to process the images and messages in news reports.
4. Recognize what may be behind your child's behavior. Your child may minimize their concerns outwardly, but they may become argumentative or withdrawn.
5. Seek help when necessary. If you are worried about your child's reaction or have concerns about his/her behavior or emotions, contact a counselor at your school or refer to your own family practice physician.
We feel confident about our own security measures at our school and we will be double checking the district safety plans. On Monday morning we will be convening our staff to review what occurred and prepare them to support our students as needed.

To all 5th Grade Parents –

The Yearbook Commitee needs your help in gathering pictures for the 5th Grade Yearbook.

We need the following pictures for each child:

1- one baby picture (taken during newborn to 2yrs old) Please use your child's name in the description line when uploading so there is no confusion as to who each baby is.

2- one picture of a favorite sport or activity

3- candid pictures from school related activities (only 5th grade students should be included in the pictures ex. if a Halloween picture is submitted with younger siblings or friends we cannot use that picture in the yearbook). You may submit pictures from grades K through 5th.

The deadline for the baby pictures & favorite activity/sport is December 21st. The deadline for all other candid pictures is January 15th.

Please see the attachment which has directions on how to directly upload pictures to the community upload feature of the yearbook system we are using. The website is community.lifetouch.com. The access code is EVNQIL. You are able to upload 5 pictures at once. When we clear out the community upload library you will be able to add another 5. We have created folders for each grade. Please make sure when uploading pictures that you are putting them into the correct grade folder. There will also be a place to add a description of the picture. ex. Halloween Parade

Food Day Announcement: Our vendor, Fresh, is closed indefinitely. Their food day that was scheduled for THIS FRIDAY, November 16th is CANCELLED, as well as ALL subsequent Fresh Food Days. We will issue a refund for all of the Fresh food days in this period as well as the one that was missed (10/30) as soon as possible.

 We will use this Friday to make up for the JAPANESE DAY missed FROM 11/2. Please check your child's orders on www.myfooddays.com to verify if you ordered Japanese day on 11/2 so you know whether to send lunch or not.

Attention Band and String Parents - It's time for Gold Strings and Gold Band to begin for the 2012-2013 school year! Gold Strings will begin rehearsing next Monday, November 19th, at 9:50 AM in Mr. Nimmo's classroom. Gold Band will begin rehearsing before school at 7:30 AM next Tuesday, November 20th, in the All Purpose Room. Please arrange your schedules so that all participating students arrive to rehearsal on time. Only students who have qualified for Gold Band and Gold Strings will be participating in our first set of rehearsals - more students will be added to each ensemble as they qualify for our performing groups. We were constantly in touch with vendors and tried assisting parents by entering their orders via our cell phones or texting.

For the food days that were missed during the week of 10/29, the following will happen:
The 10/29 pizza day is rescheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday 11/13 instead of ice cream day.
Ice Cream day is rescheduled for Tuesday, 11/20.
Fresh (10/30), OBagel (10/31), LaStrade (11/1), and Japanese Day (11/2) will be rescheduled as soon as we catch up and find days in the calendar that we can fill with these food days.

Dear Parents,

The staff of ALT is excited and looking forward our students returning to school tomorrow. As we anticipate a return to routine and normalcy, we are also aware that some of you may have circumstances which possibly require your family not to be at your residence. If this is the case, please inform the office so that we have accurate contact information should there be a need.

If you are planning to drop your child off at school in the morning, please keep the following in mind:

In order to keep the flow of traffic moving, please make sure your child is ready to exit the car when it is time. Students needing assistance or more time should be dropped off in the staff parking lot.

To ensure safety, please make sure you are not distracted by the use of a cell phone.

 A staff member will be assisting with student crossing, so please follow staff’s directions.

Once again, the staff and I look forward to the opening of school tomorrow. Mrs. Maire, our guidance counselor, members of the child study team, and classroom teachers are ready to assist students and parents who are struggling with the stress of the recent storm. You may contact them through the main office at ALT should you or your child need assistance.

As tomorrow will be a full day for students; after-school clubs will be held. If you are not planning to send your child, please send in a note to the main office.

The PTO would like to extend a sincere thank you to Mr. Robert Hagel who
constructed the GaGa Pit for the students at ALT. The Children have been
enjoying the game of GaGa for a couple of weeks. The PTO purchased the supplies
and Mr. Hagel kindly donated his time to assemble it. The students will be
enjoying 2 new funnel ball games and a volley ball system for the playground in
September. We hope the students will benefit from the new group games for all
to enjoy!

Instrumental Music Department: Thank you to all who attended June 6th's
Instrumental Music interest night. We were extremely pleased with the turnout!
To sign up for the Instrumental Music program, current Third and Fourth grade

convenience as we are hoping to finalize enrollment for the 2012-2013 school

The purpose of this meeting is to provide information about registering for Instrumental Music lessons for the 2012-2013 school year. A representative from City Music Center will be on hand to discuss instrument rental options and students will have an opportunity to try the band and string instruments taught in Warren prior to deciding on an instrument. All interested students and parents should plan to attend! Students who are already registered and participating in the Instrumental Music program do not need to attend unless they are planning to play a different instrument next year. ALT FIELD DAY 2012 - Friday June 1st - Sponsored by the PTO

It is hard to believe the end of the school year is approaching, but with that comes one of the most eagerly anticipated days at ALT.  Friday, June 1^st is ALT’s Annual Field Day, which is a fun-filled morning of sports and other activities for the students.

Like last year, the students will remain with their grade, rotating through various activities by class on the fields behind ALT, and will return to school just prior to lunch for the rest of the school day.

Please send a water bottle clearly marked with your child’s name to school that day.  In addition, please apply sunscreen to your child before school, as we are hoping for plenty of sun.

In the event of rain, a notice will be sent home and Field Day will be postponed until Friday, June 8^th.

The Instrumental Music Parent and Student Interest night that was originally scheduled for June 7th will now be held on Wednesday June 6th at 7:00 PM at Warren Middle School. The purpose of this meeting is to provide information about registering for Instrumental Music lessons for the 2012-2013 school year. A representative from City Music Center will be on hand to discuss instrument rental options and students will have an opportunity to try the band and string instruments taught in Warren prior to deciding on an instrument. All interested students and parents should plan to attend! Students who are already registered and participating in the Instrumental Music program do not need to attend unless they are planning to play a different instrument next year. Attention Instrumental Music parents - As you know, the ALT and Woodland School combined Gold Band and Gold Strings Concert will take place on Thursday evening, May 24th at 7:00 PM in the Woodland School gymnasium. Students are expected to arrive no later than 6:40. The dress rehearsals will take place on Tuesday May 22nd at Woodland School. Gold Band students will be rehearsing at Woodland from 9:00-10:45. Gold String students will leave for Woodland later in the day in order to rehearse from 12:00-1:45. Students who are in both groups will remain at Woodland School between dress rehearsals. If your child is in both groups, please make sure that they bring a lunch with them to eat at Woodland. We are looking forward to a wonderful concert!              All fifth grade students will take a math placement assessment during the month of May to help determine appropriate math placement for 6^th grade.  The following criteria will be used to determine math placement:

 Fifth grade math placement exam

• Final math grade average for the first three marking periods
• Math TABs (Traits, Aptitudes, and Behaviors) checklist
• Teacher recommendation

             Based on the above criteria your child’s math placement for the 2012-2013 school year will be determined by middle school staff.  Prior to the end of the school year, you will be sent a placement letter from the middle school identifying next year’s placement, either high or hetero math. Please address any questions or concerns about the placement process to your elementary principal.

Re: Mardi Gras - "C A R N A V A L"

Grades K – 5 "Carnaval" t-shirts: This year, ALT will be celebrating "Carnaval” on Tuesday, March 13^th. Those of you new to our school, please keep in mind that this is not a graded project but a way for all to celebrate each other’s differences. All grade level classes are to color/decorate a t-shirt at HOME using tie-dye, markers, etc. but no glitter, please. Students are allowed to use last’s years t-shirts or design a new one. Students should also make their own bracelets and necklaces using beads, spaghetti or anything else that they can string/tie together. Students may also wear a colorful wig or hat. The idea is to be festive and lively. On Tuesday, March 13^th , students are to wear to school their t-shirt, bracelets, necklaces and other accessories to celebrate "Carnaval." This is a school-wide project to show each individual’s creativeness and how accepting we are of each other's differences. Just a note that during Spanish class, student’s have been working on different "Carnaval" projects per grade level (Grades 1-5). Also, the 4^th graders will be visiting classrooms March 12-16^th to do their yearly “Carnaval” parade.  Please set a reminder for your child so he/she can take part in the festivities by wearing their “Carnaval” t-shirts on March 13th.

Reading is very special this month at ALT. We celebrated Read Across America on Friday; we are having our vistiting author, Kate Klise with us today; and the PTO is sponsoring a Book Fair this week.

Also during this month, ALT will be all of our students to read 20 minutes each night. This could also include parents reading to their children.

At the end of each week, students will be given a coupon to place in a prize bag. Students can select from the following: Book of choice; Book signed by the visiting author, Kate Klise; Principal for the Day; Homework Pass; Large stuffed animal; or Lunch of choice. Names will be drawn at the end of the month.

This is a reminder that the PTO meeting tonight, Thursday, January 19th, will be held in the library at 7 pm.

Please be advised that there will be a test of the reverse 911 system for ALT Staff and Families tomorrow, January 19^th. The test will be conducted after all buses have delivered students home. The message will inform staff and parents of the test and that there is no emergency. In the future, should there be an emergency specifically at ALT; you will be notified through the reverse 911 system.

The next PTO meeting will be held on Thursday, January 19th at 7 PM. the meeting will be held in the Library.

To all 5th Grade Parents – The deadline (DECEMBER 1, 2010) for your baby/younger year picture(younger than 4) and individual activity picture is a few days away. Please, these pictures are most important and your child will really feel left out if you don't send these in.

You can email the pictures to Sedra Spruell at sedra1@optonline.net or send hard copies in an envelope marked 5th grade yearbook (make sure you put your child’s name on photos).



If you have some great shots thru the ALT years (with just other 5th grade ALT students) and want your child in some candid shots please give us those pictures. We have extended that deadline to January 15, 2011 but absolutely no later. We wanted to give you more time after the holidays with such a crazy fall we had.

There are two ways you can give us your candid pictures.

If you have a lot of pictures you can send a disk in an envelope marked 5th grade yearbook. Please separate pictures by years.

If you want to give us a few pictures (5 pictures) directly you can follow the attached directions. You can upload it directly thru the community upload feature of the yearbook system we are using. The access code is "11172612", follow the directions. When we clear out the community upload library you will be able to add another 5, please check on Fridays if you want to upload more pictures – please make sure you label the pictures, grade and names of children.

American Education Week

This is a reminder that visitations for American Education Week will be held on Wednesday, November 16^th from 9:30- 10:30 and Thursday, November 17^th from 1:30 - 2:30.

There has been a change for Parent Visitations during American Education Week. The correct days and times are listed below:

Wednesday, November 16   9:30 - 10:30

Thursday, November 17     1:30 - 2:30

The days listed in the PTO newsletter were incorrect.

Tomorrow, Nov. 4^th, ALT will hold its Halloween Parade at 2:00 PM. Students will return to classrooms at 1:30 to prepare for the parade. A light snack and water will be provided by students at that time.

The Kindergarten will lead the parade from the Kindergarten side doors; towards the front of the building. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade will exit out of the Kindergarten wing, and the 4^th and 5^th will exit out of the exit doors closest to the music room. The parade will circle back through the building using the 5^th grade doors. The parade will circle once more via the exit doors closest to the music room before returning to classrooms to prepare for dismissal.

Parents: If you are interested in taking your child after the parade, you are asked to sign your child out with the classroom teacher.

Reminder: Ice cream day is tomorrow. The cost of ice cream is $1.00.

Please enter through the front doors of the school at 7PM. Everyone decorating a trunk must drop their children at the front doors of the school and proceed to the side parking lot where you will have until 8PM to set-up your trunks. No children should be in the side parking lot until after 8PM. All families not decorating a trunk must park in the front parking lot.

The comedy juggling act of the Gizmo Guys will be performing in the ALT gym from 7:15 until 8PM. After the performance, the children can enjoy music, dancing, the video gaming truck, and of course lots of trunk or treating. Please remember that all candy for this event must be nut free and donations should be placed in the drop boxes located in the school lobby by morning of Friday 10/28.

If you intend to go to Wagner Farm for Brite Nite tonight, it is suggested that you wear boots.

In addition to the public nights ALT tickets will be accepted tomorrow night at the Central School and Woodland night.

Dear Volunteers,

We have been receiving correspondence from many asking why they are not on the Food Days Schedule. It has been brought to our attention from various chairs that at some point you might have been scheduled and for one reason or another was not able to volunteer that day. We all understand that we have hectic, overscheduled lives with many family obligations, but the ALT PTO takes the Food Days Program seriously as this is our biggest fundraiser for our community.

The schedule is made and given out with ample time to find a replacement if you are unable to attend. This schedule given months in advance also allows all of us to make appointments etc. accordingly.

We completely understand that we sometimes have something last minute that comes up, a sick child, family event etc. this however often puts the chair in a bind to find someone to replace a volunteer within hours or even minutes.

If you feel that you would like to be on the schedule and can commit and come on your scheduled day, please contact the food day chairs. In addition, please note that we as parents must act a role models for our students and follow the procedures as described on the volunteer power point that is required to be watched prior to volunteering at any Warren school.

Thank you again for your interest. Your child and our community appreciate it.

Dear Friends,

As we approach our second food day period, we want to thank all of you for volunteering your time and for making food days possible at ALT.  With the exception of a few small bumps, so far food days have been running smoothly.  Before your next volunteer day, please remember the following:

• The paraprofessionals are responsible for calling the children to their lunch lines.
• Student behavior should be addressed by the paraprofessionals in the lunch room.  They are trained to work with our children and know the procedures for handling conflict.  If you see a problem, please inform a paraprofessional. 
• Parents are welcome to quietly visit with their children after lunch is served.  Please respect and observe the rules of the lunchroom during this time.  Remember children are supposed to remain seated during their lunch period, and it is everyone’s responsibility to support a calm lunchroom environment.
• Volunteers should exhibit role model behavior in the lunch room and refrain from discussing the children or other personal issues in a public setting.  We should always respect the privacy of our ALT families.
• Please remember, our children’s classrooms are not accessible at this time.  When parents drop by a classroom unannounced, even for just a “quick peek inside,” it can distract the children and disrupt learning. 

Our food days are a huge success and we want to continue to offer them to our children.  Please help us maintain organized food service while supporting a safe and enjoyable lunchroom environment for our children and staff.

Dear Parents,

                              I am reaching out to all of you today because Trunk r Treat is approaching and we have a very low amount of people willing to decorate Trunks. I am very devastated and disappointed that more people are not willing to join in the fun. Not only do we not have enough trunks, but we do not have enough people willing to help volunteer with the festivities. In order to have a successful night, we need everyone to pitch in and do their part. Right now these are the numbers we have:

19 families willing to decorate a trunk

5 families willing to volunteer

60 families willing to donate three bags of candy and participate in the event.

I implore you to reconsider the option you have chosen because there will not be an event for your children to participate in.... if people do not reconsider their choice. I have 5 families including my own who have signed up for all three choices.  Last year we had 42 Trunks. There seems to be more people attending this year with fewer volunteers. Hi Fifth Grade Moms,

It’s that time already, if you can believe it!! We need all of you to look thru your pictures from ALT K-present time to send in for your child’s yearbook. We need all kinds of pictures - school events, parties, sports, scouts, even summertime activities; but they have to be all ALT 5^th grade students in the shot. We need you to be able to then sort the pictures by grade (make separate folders/files) and put on a disc for us by December 1. Put in an envelop marked PTO 5^th Grade Yearbook. Put your name on the disk. 

Right now we need an individual photo of your child in an extra curricular activity and a younger year photo of them (under 5 years old). These pictures can be emailed to sedra1@optonline.net. If you can’t scan and email these pictures, hard copies can be sent in an envelop marked PTO 5^th Grade Yearbook, put your child’s name on the back of the pictures. We would like this by November 10^th.

REACH - Warren Township Schools

To: 5^th Grade Parents/Guardians

The Reach department is pleased to tell you about the Reach 5^th Grade Math Compacting program. Developed with input from a district-wide task force, highlights of the program include:

• All students will take math compacting pretests prior to the start of each new unit.
• Reach teachers will use the Glencoe Course 2 book as the primary curricular source, as well as other materials.
• Reach teachers, rather than 5^th grade math teachers, will assign class work, homework, and projects to students while they participate in a compacting unit.
• Students who successfully participate in a math compacting unit will receive a grade of 100% for that unit.

Students will be identified for math compacting when they demonstrate mastery of a mathematical unit of study before the unit is taught by scoring 95% or higher on the pretest for that unit. While participating in math compacting, students will go to the Reach room for the majority of their math instruction time. The Reach teacher will provide instruction, check homework, complete activities and administer assessments. Reach teachers will assign class work and projects for the students to complete in their regular 5^th grade math classroom, as well as homework.

Designed to challenge students who have demonstrated mastery in a given unit before it is taught, the content of the math compacting program will be rigorous and encourage these students to move beyond their comfort zones. Emphasis will be placed on mathematical literacy, in terms of reading and writing about math concepts, and toward developing independent, self-directed learners. Hands-on labs and projects will engage students and develop critical problem solving skills.

Students who do not complete assignments with proficiency or fail to attend compacting regularly may be required to forego participation in math compacting, as per consultation with 5^th grade math teachers and parents.

The Reach department looks forward to continuing to supplement Warren’s excellent 5^th grade math program by providing challenging, differentiated curriculum for students who have mastered math concepts in a given unit before they are taught. Please contact the Reach teacher at your child’s school with any questions you may have about the program.

Each school office requires emergency contact information for your child's file.

It is very important for the safety and well-being of your child that we have access to accurate and complete
information while your child is in our care.

We have information on file for your child that needs your review.

Warren Township Schools requests that all parents/guardians log into a secure application on our District Website to enter emergency contact information online.

This information will be used to contact you or the individuals you designate in the case of an emergency, a school closing, etc.

The district also utilizes a Reverse "911" system that will automatically call the phone numbers you give us to notify you about weather related school closings, delayed openings or early dismissals, and any other emergency situations, etc.

Please log onto the website during the period Thursday, September 8 through Thursday, September 15 (EXTENDED THOROUGH THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20) and enter missing data or edit the information on file.

You should have received a personalized letter that gives you the websie address and log-in information for your child(ren).

Each student's information must be entered separately.

A message to all Elementary Instrumental Music students and parents from Mr. Nimmo and Mr. Gant - Instrumental Music lessons for the 2011-2012 school year will be starting next week! Registered students will be receiving more information regarding the date and time of their first lesson this Friday. Please make sure that your child is prepared with an instrument in working order (purchased or rented) and lesson book. Rented instruments have been or will be delivered to your child's school in the coming days and do include a lesson book. Although our instrumental music recruitment programs took place last June which has traditionally been our deadline, we will still allow last minute instrumental music program registration until the end of the school day on Monday September 12. As a reminder, there will be a food day tomorrow at ALT; however 5^th grade students need to bring their lunch since tomorrow was the scheduled rain date for the 5^th grade event.

The time has arrived!! The Fifth Grade Event Wednesday June 8^th!!   Please reread your information sheet that was sent home with the t-shirt orders.   Here are a few points to keep in mind:  

1) Your child will receive his/her t-shirt Wednesday morning at school.

2)  Please have them wear their swimsuits, sunscreen and bring a change of clothes as they may want to change after swimming.  They need to wear Sneakers! (flipflops may be worn around the pool only.

3)  They will have lunch provided by Famous Daves.

4)  They will be taken to and from camp harmony via bus and will return to school around 2:15 for regular dismissal.

5)  No food day on Thursday for 5^th grade as this was the rain date for the event.

I would like to extend a Big Thank You to all of the parents who assisted with Field Day today; especially the two chairs: Mrs. Diorio and Mrs. Drews. All of your hard work created a wonderful day for the children of ALT.

On June 14th, the 3rd grade will present their Theme Day Exhibit, “Native Americans”, celebrating the continent of North America. In order to prepare for this event we need your support.

At this time we need individuals interested in assisting with the following tasks.

*   Exhibit Development - volunteers will meet during the weeks of May 31st and June 6th (dates TBD based on volunteer availability) to create Native American themed decorations for the 3rd grade hallway. No artistic ability is needed.

*   Exhibit Set-up - this will take place on Monday, June 13th. Volunteers will transform the 3rd grade hallway into a Native American exhibit.

*   Presentation Day Support - on Tuesday, June 14th volunteers will staff centers and supervise presentations to the ALT students about Native Americans.

In order to make this event successful we need the full support of the ALT family. Please join us in making this day memorable for your child by volunteering any time you can spare - one hour or one day. It will really make this day something your child can be proud of.

Gold Strings students will have their dress rehearsal at Warren Middle School on Wednesday May 25th in the morning. Students are asked to arrive at their elementary school at 8:25 as the buses to the Middle School leave at 8:50. The Gold Strings concert will be held the following night, Thursday May 26th, at Warren Middle School @ 7:00 pm. Students are asked to arrive at the WMS by 6:30.

  Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

             All fifth grade students will take a math placement assessment during the month of May to help determine appropriate math placement for 6^th grade.  The following criteria will be used to determine math placement:

 Fifth grade math placement exam

• Final math grade average for the first three marking periods
• Math TABs (Traits, Aptitudes, and Behaviors) checklist
• Teacher recommendation

             Based on the above criteria your child’s math placement for the 2011-2012 school year will be determined by middle school staff.  Prior to the end of the school year, you will be sent a placement letter from the middle school identifying next year’s placement, either high or hetero math. Please address any questions or concerns about the placement process to your elementary principal.

ALT Cares about our "One World" bracelets are being sold during lunches this week for $1 each.

There are child and adult sizes availalbe.  Don't forget to wear your "One World" bracelet on

Wednesday to support the 5th grade musical "Asia's Got Talent" which will be performed for

students at 1:30 pm and for parents at 7 pm in the gym.

Students/familes can also make donations to help Japan.  Please give your donations to your classroom

teachers or send it in an envelope to Mrs. Jensen.  Checks should be payable to the "Red Cross".

Tomorrow's an ice cream day at ALT.

Dear Parents,

For anyone who forgot to send the artworks order to school, I can accept a late order on  Monday, March 28^th.  This is the last day. Orders can’t be placed after that.  We need to get the orders to the company so they will be ready by Mother’s Day.  If your child wanted to submit a different piece of artwork that would be fine, just follow the guidelines of the attached document.  It can’t be any larger than 8 ½” x 11 in.  The child’s name can be on the front or the back.   Extra order forms are available in the office and checks need to be made out to the ALT PTO.

Somerset Patriots Activity Raffle

Since we are hosting a Five School Event at the Somerset Patriots this year, we are in the position to raffle off opportunities for the students to participate on the field before and during the game.  The opportunities have been broken down by grade.  If your child would like to participate in the raffle specified for their grade, please indicate that in the appropriate section and include your child’s name, his/her teacher’s name, and school which they attend.  Some students may be eligible to be in two raffles, scouts for example.  Your child may enter their name in both raffles, but they may win only one spot. 

Take note that some of the events occur before game time; please do not take a spot for your child if you cannot guarantee to get your child to the stadium by the designated time, there are many others who would enjoy the opportunity.  Upon arrival to the stadium, please find your seats and then bring your child to the courtesy desk at the designated time, this way your child knows where they should return to after their event.  Deadline to enter is May 6^th; send in this form with your ticket order.  Good Luck!

ALT Helps Japan

During the week of March 28th-April 1st, the ALT school will be collecting money to help the earthquake victims in Japan through the Red Cross.  This goes along with our "One World" Theme and the 5th grade musical on Wed, March 30th called "Asia's Got Talent".  At the 7 pm 5th grade performance on March 30th, parents can also contribute to this cause by putting money or checks (payable to the Red Cross) in the collection jars and we are also asking local businesses if they would like to join us in donating as well.  Thank you for your support!

The 4th and 5th chorus will be performing their spring concert on Tuesday, April 19th at 1:30 pm in the gym. All chorus members should wear white shirts and black pants/skirts/shorts for our concert.  They are so excited about all the fun music and I think teachers and parents will be tapping their toes to these familiar tunes from their youth!  See you then!

Dear Parents,

Your children will be coming home with an envelope from school  which will contain artwork they designed in art class.  We have teamed up with a company called Original Works, which we have worked with a few years ago.  This company turns the child’s artwork into beautiful stationary and keepsakes.  If you would like to place an order, the information is included with your child’s artwork.  This is a different company than the one we have used for the last 2 years. 

If you decide to order, please refer to the price sheet in the envelope.  All checks should be made out to the ALT PTO and orders need to be placed by March 25^th.  The items will be ready by Mother’s Day and they make great gifts!!!

Look for your child’s envelope to come home sometime this week.(it will come home on the day your child has art)

Just a reminder from Señorita Rebimbas, ALT's Spanish Teacher, that tomorrow, Tuesday, March 8th, is the culmination of the "Carnaval"/Mardi Gras festivities.  Please make sure that your child wears to school a tie-dye shirt or one they have decorated using paint or markers, along with their necklaces and bracelets made of spaghetti, beads, etc or store bought.  The kids can even wear wigs or spray paint their hair.  The idea is to be colorful and bring a smile to school because learning is fun.  On Tuesday, we will also be treated to some art work and posters which will be displayed in the All-Purpose room and the surrounding hallway as well as some other activities throughout the week.  This year, "Carnaval" is in conjunction with our Cultural Theme Day of South America.  Mr. Clark (Physical Education), Mrs. Jensen (Music), Mrs. Pellagrino (Art), Mrs. Jackson (Library),  Mrs. Connelly (Computers) and Mrs. Kline (Reach) have each prepared activities, games, stories, art work or a song for the kids to learn about South America.  We hope the kids enjoy the festivities with this educational and fun-filled day/week.  Don't forget to wear your colorful "Carnaval" shirts tomorrow and a huge CONGRATULATIONS from Señorita Rebimbas to her 4th graders for the wonderful and creative masks and costumes.  The "Carnaval" parades last week were a big success.

This month ALT will be celebrating the importance of reading. There are several planned activities tomorrow which recognize Read Across America. We will start the day with morning announcement to highlight the activities for the day. During lunch, Dr. Seuss puzzles will be given to the children to work on.  One student from each grade level will win a little prize at the end of the day, but every student will receive a Dr. Seuss pencil. 

After lunch, we will have a school wide DEAR in the hallway, and later that afternoon Mrs. Jackson will be hosting a Sneetches party for the kindergarten students. Some of the 4th graders will perform a Reader's Theater of The Sneetches.

On Wednesday, from 7:00 – 7:30 PM, Mrs. Jackson is hosting a reading evening for second grade students and their parents. Mrs. Jackson has selected a book to read aloud to the students and parents. This event will be held in the Library, and students will need to be chaperoned by a parent.

Also, during the month of March we are encouraging students to read at least 20 minutes each evening, or for parents to read 20 minutes to your child. Each Friday, students who accomplish this task will be given a coupon to place in a prize bag at lunch. Names will be drawn at the end of the month. Prizes consist of: An Autographed Megan McCarthy Book; A Book of Your Choice; A Large Stuffed Animal; A Sparky Bobblelhead; Homework Pass; Lunch for one Day; and Principal for the Day.

Book Fair

March 8, 9, and 10, 2011

 Dear Parents,

 The PTO will conduct a Book Fair on March 8, 9, and 10, 2011.

Students will visit the Book Fair twice with their teachers.  The first visit will be to review the books and/or make purchases if they wish.  The second visit will be solely to make their final purchases.  

Parents are welcome and encouraged to come and assist their children with their book selections during their scheduled times.  A Book Fair flyer will be going out later this week with a preview of books available at the fair.

Many volunteers are needed to help make this a success.  Please sign up to help out by contacting Gerri Fiacco or Julie Bu at Gfiacco@earthlink.net or juliebu@optonline.net with the time you are available.  We can also use some help setting up the fair on Monday, March 7^th from 9:00-11:00 and  March 10^th for clean-up 1:50-3:30.   Thank-you.

• No foods containing peanut products per District Policy.
• Please be aware of the food allergies in your class and

avoid bringing in foods with known allergens.

• Foods should arrive in the main office before 10:00 a.m. and MUST include an ingredient list.
• Please do not attach lollipops, candy, etc. to Valentine cards.
  • Board Policy #3542.1 (Local Wellness/Nutrition) In an attempt to find a reasonable compromise in these areas outlined in the district policy, the ban on foods/beverages w/ sugar as the first ingredient, and on candy, shall not be applied to birthday parties, special celebrations, etc. Please note that all Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value are not permitted to be served or distributed at school.

• Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value:  soda water, water ices, chewing gum, hard candy, jellies and gums, marshmallow candies, fondant, licorice, spun candy and candy coated popcorn. FMNV shall not be served at any time in school, including parties and special celebrations, no exceptions.

Health Office Reminders:

• We are seeing many students with stomach viruses as well as the continuation of strep throat.

If your child experiences vomiting, diarrhea or a fever, they need to remain at home for at least 24 hours. If your child vomits during the night, it is very unlikely to be “something they ate.” For the health and wellness of all students, please follow these guidelines.

• Remember to replace your toothbrushes after an illness and wash hands frequently…

Today the students and staff of ALT voted for a slogan for 2011. Suggestions were generated from students and staff. The results are as follows:

PTO Meeting is next Thurs Jan 20th at 7 PM. In an effort to allow working parents to attend our meetings, this year we are holding our January PTO meeting at night. We hope you will be able to attend.

We will be wearing our ALT Hats tomorrow to celebrate our slection of a 2011 Slogan. Get in the spirit!

 Technology Update: Our school is behind in technology.    We need bigger screens and better audio.    We will use the long term gift to add two projection screens for all purpose room    and the gym.  We would also like a cart that can be moved from room to room    to do video conferencing.    Cost is $12,852    Miss Bond asked if we can buy smart boards so that first grade will each have one.      We need to have PTO approve this and then it    get it approved by the board of Ed.   Motion to approve:  Stacy Hagel and Christina Larson

ALT Holiday Gift Fair 2010 Volunteer Sign-Up Sheet

The ALT Gift Fair will be held on December 1&2. Great gifts are available for the students and parents to purchase for all members of the family including your pets! Volunteers are still needed- please see the attached volunteer form to sign up.

Dear ALT Families,

The Holiday Gift Fair provides the students with a wonderful opportunity to be able to purchase Holiday Gifts for all of their loved ones.  We need MANY volunteers to make this a successful event for the children.  With this in mind, we are kindly asking that you consider volunteering your time.  If you are unable to volunteer for this event, you are encouraged to attend the Gift Fair to assist your child at their scheduled shopping time (see attached chart).  Young children can especially benefit from their parent’s assistance.

Halloween Parade Reminders

The Halloween Parade starts at 2:00 PM on the back field of ALT.

Please be courteous and pay attention to the no parking signs.

Cars will need to be removed from our side lot at 2:30 so the buses can get in.

If parents wish to take their child home with them after the parade, they will need to sign them out with the classroom teacher.

ALT PTO Trunk-or-Treat - Friday, October 29th, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

Dear Families, 

This year I am pleased to offer a “lunch bunch” program at ALT School. Your child will have opportunities to discover some ways to make friends and enhance their ability to maintain friendships. We encourage conversation, listen to stories and play simple games. All while we enjoy lunch.

During the beginning of the school year I will include students new to our school and 5^th grade ALT leaders on our Welcoming Team to join in groups meeting during lunchtimes. 

Throughout the school year your child may be selected or may request to participate in a lunch group with their peers. The “lunch bunches” will meet in the guidance office during lunchtime. Participation in the group is completely voluntary. If your child will be attending on a regular basis, you will be notified.  Should you not want your child to participate, please indicate this in a note.

I am looking forward to getting to know our students in a relaxed atmosphere. Thank you for your support.

Health Office Update:

 At the present time, we have no cases of head lice at ALT. However, there have been several recent cases at other elementary schools in the district. In order to maintain a low number of cases, we need families to support lice checks at home. Please check your own children!

• The first sign of head lice infestation is usually itching of the scalp, often behind the ear and back of the head.
• Unlike dandruff, which easily can be flaked off or removed from the hair, the nit (egg) is teardrop shaped, yellowish or grey in color and is cemented to the hair. These tiny eggs will be attached to the base of the hair, very near the head. When you run your finger over the nit, it may feel like a grain of sand. The louse is a 2-mm. reddish-brown, six legged insect, that does not fly or jump.

Don’t Panic: Lice are not a health hazard or sign of poor hygiene. Also they do not spread disease.

NEVER initiate treatment unless there is a clear diagnosis of head lice.

 If you do discover head lice on your child, please contact your family physician for recommended treatment.

Board of Education almost did not hire a teacher needed for K The board almost overlooked the guidelines of class size Board was violating trust of parents and voters “Board is struggling”- “Greater attendance at board meetings is critical.” The board needs to see more parents at these meetings.  To All Third Grade Parents and Guardians From Mrs. Kline, REACH Teacher:

The Reach staff is currently in the process of determining which students’ needs will best be met by participation in the Reach, Too! program. While the Reach enrichment program for all students is extensive, we believe that some academically gifted students may benefit from participation in the Reach, Too! program.

Reach, Too! is a pull-out program that allows a small cluster of identified students to meet with the Reach teacher and intellectual peers. These students will be exposed to differentiated curriculum at an appropriate pace and will be able to pursue other rigorous academic interests. When a child is selected for Reach, Too!, an assumption is made that he/she is capable of missing academic classes without a problem and will not have difficulty making up missed work.

Criteria for selection into this program include: classroom teacher evaluations, district-wide language arts and math problem solving tests, assessment of classroom performance in relation to peers, and results of the SAGES-2. The SAGES-2 is a nationally recognized assessment tool used in many elementary gifted programs.

The SAGES-2 is a challenging test, and the Reach staff has found that children should have a high degree of motivation or they may become frustrated or upset by its level of difficulty. We ask that parents give serious consideration as to whether taking this assessment is appropriate for your child.

Parents have the option of opting-out of the SAGES-2 test. If you would like to opt-out of the SAGES-2 test, you must contact Dr. Kline. You can email her through her district webpage, via phone (908) 753-5300 x 6327, or in writing to the school. Please include your child’s name and classroom teacher.

Since we plan to administer the SAGES-2 during the week of September 27^th, it would be helpful for all opt-outs to be received by September 24. Parents of students who are accepted into the Reach, Too! program will receive letters by the end of October.

This is a reminder that Dr. Crader will be holding a reception for parents this eveing in the Middle School Library at 6:00 PM. The Board of Education meetin will follow at 7:00 PM.

Tomorrow is Picture Day at ALT.

Thursday night is Back-to- School Night for Parents to meet with classroom teachers and specialists. The evening begins at 7:00 PM.

In Girl Scouts, a girl can:  have fun making new friends, exploring the outdoors, experiencing the arts, learning about herself and the world she lives in, helping others and sharing good times.  Girl Scouts builds self-confidence and self esteem.

 If your daughter loves to seek new adventures, she should be a Girl Scout!

 The program is girl-driven, reflecting the ever-changing needs and interests of participating girls Kindergarten to Twelfth Grade.  Activities are grade appropriate and based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, as well as on the Girl Scout Promise and Law. It encourages increased skill-building and responsibility, and also promotes the development of strong leadership and decision-making skills. 

 Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place!  We hope you and your daughter will consider joining us at our informational open house for potential new scouts in Warren Township:

Welcome back to another great year at ALT!

The PTO is planning to have a ladies shopping night out on November 18th filled with many vendors, food, good friends, entertainment, and raffles.   It will be held in the social hall at Temple Har Shalom.

Before we go to the outside community we would like to reach within our ALT community to see if anyone who owns or represents a business would like to participate as one of our featured vendors at our Ladies Night Out.  We are also requesting that if you would like to be a vendor that you donate an item or a basket that we can use to raffle off during the evening.

This event is not a fundraiser, merely a night for our moms to come out, have fun, and SHOP!

There will be great food and drink compliments of the PTO

Welcome Back to School!!

Please check your child for evidence of head lice prior to starting school on September 7^th. 

The first sign of head lice infestation is usually itching of the scalp, often behind the ear area and back of the head.

Unlike dandruff, which easily can be flaked off or removed from the hair, the nit (egg) is teardrop shaped, yellowish or grey in color and is cemented to the hair. These tiny eggs will be attached to the base of the hair, very near the head. When you run your finger over the nit, it may feel like a grain of sand. The louse is a 2-mm. reddish-brown, six legged insect, that does not fly or jump.

Don’t Panic: Lice are not a health hazard or sign of poor hygiene. Also they do not spread disease.

NEVER initiate treatment unless there is a clear diagnosis of head lice.

 If you do discover head lice on your child, please contact your family physician for recommended treatment. If you have treated your child for a definite case of lice over the summer, please notify the school nurse prior to the first day of school. Thank you for your cooperation.

Welcome Back Letter and information for parents.

Wagner Farm Arboretum’s first annual Brite Nites/Haunted House. The fall event will be held on the weekends of October 22-24 and 29 –31 at the Arboretum at 197 Mountain Avenue in Warren. The event will include a pumpkin path consisting of hundreds of intricately carved, lighted pumpkins weaving its way through the gardens. Other attractions include a Haunted House Showcase.

Dear ALT Parents,

 I want to thank the parents of ALT for such a wonderful year. There were so many fabulous events that went on during the year for us to be proud, and it is the support of the parents and the collaboration with staff that make these such a success. Events that included Family Fun Nights, Field Day, Cultural Enrichment Programs, Book Fairs, and the Visiting Author Program; are just a few examples of the ALT community celebrations. 

Next year, we will look forward to celebrating differences and experiencing different cultures through the theme of, “One World”. We will be calling on members of the community to assist us in the planning and celebrations for the different cultures and continents at the beginning of next year.

 At the close of this school year, ALT will say goodbye to three veteran teachers who have decided to retire. Mrs. Nimmo, who taught instrumental music in the elementary schools for 40 years, Mrs. Novak, who has taught 38 years in the district, and is currently teaching fourth grade, and Ms. Pasternak, who has taught for close to 30 years, and who is currently teaching fifth grade.  All three of these professionals have dedicated their careers to the students in the Warren Township School District, and it with great appreciation that we wish them well in their retirement.

 Best wishes to all of the ALT families, as we take that step towards summer. I hope you find it to be relaxing and enjoyable, with the opportunity to create wonderful lasting memories with your family.

Talent Show Dress Rehearsal- Students who are participating need to have all props, music, costumes etc. in school by 9:30.

Talent Show- Due to the number of acts, the show will begin at 1:00. Parents of those students participating may attend.

Moving Up Ceremony- The program will begin at 11:00 in the ALT gymnasium. Students are asked to wear their 5^th grade event T-Shirts. If they do not have one, please have them wear a navy blue T-shirt.

6/23 & 6/24- are 12:45 dismissal days.
