SPECIAL EDUCATION:

Co-Teaching Project

For this school year, we have expanded our in-class support program to include full day co-teachers.  One special education teacher and one general education teacher share a classroom.  Students who are classified as well as typical students experience instruction from two experienced professionals. 

 

This program will be continued in 2008-2009.  Determination as to where these classes are located depends primarily on the needs of the special education students.  Our goal is to have at least one co-teaching pair in every school in Warren.

 

Parent Advisory Group

We have a group of interested parents who meet twice a year to discuss special education in Warren.  Anyone who is interested in serving with this group (there is limit of 20), is requested to contact us at the district office (908-753-5300, ext. 5704, 5705).  In the two years that we have been meeting, we have had requests from parents on several issues, inluding having more information during transition times (grades 5 and 8) and that has been done.  We have also shared state statistics which is available to all on the state of New Jersey web site (www.state.nj.us/education).

 

Emphasis on Reading for 2007-2008

For 2007-2008, we have focused on the teaching of reading, not only for general education students, but for special education students as well.  Here are some of the initiatives:

·        Kindergarten and 1st graders throughout the district have an opportunity to reinforce phonics knowledge by our use of the Orton based program, Sonday System.

·        All elementary special education teachers have knowledge and use if needed.

·        A six session in-service which was very well attended was held on teaching reading to struggling students.

·        During the summer, two in-service programs will be conducted on the Sonday System.

 

CHARACTER EDUCATION (GUIDANCE):

The emphasis for 2007-2008 was the encouragement of positive social skills.  In the elementary schools, the guidance counselors utilized lunch bunches to help students relate better to peers.  In the Middle School, the TAP program continued successfully with some of the same goals.  We are planning to continue our work in this area by making sure our efforts to address bullying are reviewed.

 

REACH and E2:

Our goal continues to be the “reaching” of all the students in our district, by having programs that are all-school, self-selective and designated for the population of REACH, Too! and E2.  We have had several opportunities for schools to share activities, even across grade levels.  We have had contest winners from all schools and levels.  For next year, we are working with all students in the area of environmental issues.

 

MULTI-CULTURAL ACTIVITIES:

We have a group of staff members, representing a variety of cultural backgrounds that meet regularly to discuss cultural issues that may arise in our schools.  For next year, we plan to expand this group’s role to include a service to help newly arrived students and their families acclimate more successfully and quicker to our Warren community.  This group also learns more about the various cultures that make up Warren’s population.

 

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS:

SePTO and Parenting Connection (formerly Life Skills) continues to provide information on timely issues.  We are in the process of planning for the 2008-2009 school year and ask that if any of you would like to serve, to let us know as soon as possible.  Staff members also serve on the Warren Youth Services Commission and on Municipal Alliance.

On Wednesday May 21st, the students in the Aviation E2 elective will have the unique opportunity to witness the medevac helicopter in action. At approximately 9:00 am, the helicopter will land on the property of Warren Middle School and the students will meet the pilots and crew as well as tour the inside of the chopper. This notice is to alert you to this event. There will be no actual emergency! We will also have at the same time a visit from lifelong aviator Skip Rawson. This is an exhilarating experience that should not be missed.

Recent natural disasters have touched people in Warren who have friends and relatives all over the globe.  In just this month alone, we have seen violent tornados here in America, a devastating, murderous cyclone in Myanmar and an earthquake in China that has created unspeakable havoc and horror.  In the spirit of community and coming together to help those in need, no matter where they may be, the Warren schools stand ready to offer whatever assistance we can.
 
If you or somebody you know has been affected by these disasters and could use some support, of any kind, please contact your school's guidance counselor or principal.  We will do what we can to help people get through these trying times, because it's times like these that allow a community to come together and really show its mettle.  The world is now truly flat and we are all as interconnected as ever.  Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by these recent global tragedies and if there are any Warren residents we can help get through this difficult period, please do not hesitate to reach out and let us know.

Attention all 6th Grade girls in chorus:  practice for both guides cancelled today.
 
All 7th and 8th Grade Band Students have a rehearsal today period 6 for the Marching Band.  Also, those selected 6th grade band students do need to attend.
 
The 6th grade orchestra will rehearse on Thursday during the 3rd period.  All should attend!  Please bring your violins!
 
Today's talent show auditions will start at exactly 2:50 PM in the All Purpose Room.  Please be on time and bring your music.  The schedule is on Mr. Van Tine and Mrs. MacGorman's door.
Most students will go home on the late bus, however, a few students will need to arrange for pick-up at 4:15 PM.  If you are unable to get a ride it is up to you to see if you can switch with someone else.  SGA members who can stay to help must be picked up at 4:15 PM.

Spring activities were discussed and are listed below and require your attention. The poor state of the checking account was described by Mrs. Barnum to the parents and a collection was suggested by one of the attending parents. Of the ~53 parents attending, $540 was collected, resulting in an average of $10 donation per parent. In describing what occurred to a non-attending parent, an additional $15 was donated, resulting in $555 deposit an increase over the $300 in the checking account. This account was being charged a monthly fee as a result of being below the required minimum. The poor financial state has resulted in no decorations for the concerts, support money and awards for the students. Thank you to all the parents attending the meeting!

 

May 6th and 7th  - Elementary Instrumental Tour

The tour requires the dress to be blue band shirt, black pants/skirt and dark shoes

 

May 8th 7:30pm –  6th, 7th and 8th grade Band and Jazz Band Concert

The concert dress is the blue band shirt, black pants/skirt and dark shoes

The 6th grade students need to bring cookies

The 7th grade students need to bring a 2-liter bottle of drink

The 8th grade students need to bring cups

Donations will be collected for all Music activities and support items.

The Charity Fitness Walk-a-thon held the afternoon before spring break was a huge success.
We were able to present a check to Make a Wish in the amount of $20,186.50.

The Girl's Softball Team won their 3rd straight game yesterday, defeating Valley View 13 - 3. Great job girls!!

There is an important change in today's chorus practice for 8th grade sopranos and altos: BOTH sopranos and altos are to report during 2nd guide today. All must attend!
 
There is a Joint Band rehearsal today Per. 2 for 7th and 8th grade.
 
Mrs. Veitch and Mrs. MacGorman would like to congratulate the winners of the Iron Chef 4 competition. For the first time ever we have a tie.   Everyone who participated did a fantastic job. Thank you to our judges as well.
 
The "Make a Wish Foundation" thermometers continue to rise as we collect donations. As of this morning the donation totals from students and staff are:
Grade 8 - $971
Grade 7 - $1,702
Grade 6 - $2,213
Thanks to very generous donations we are almost to $5,000.
 
Please bring in all the donations you can by TOMORROW. At the completion of the Walkathon the student body will be presenting a check to a representative of the "Make a Wish" Foundation. Let's show him how giving WMS is!!
Donations can be given to your home room teacher or placed in Mrs. MacGorman's mailbox. If you do not have a donation sheet, just be sure to label the donation with your NAME and GRADE. We will continue to accept donations when we return from break, but it is helpful if we have them by first thing tomorrow so we can have a grand total!
Remember to bring a water bottle, sunscreen and wear your designated color shirt on Friday....
