Mount Horeb School is a K - 5 elementary school with an enrollment of
approximately 390 students. The building consists of a staff of
approximately 60 classroom teachers, specialists, and support staff. In
addition, the Warren Township School District preschool program is
housed in the school.
The Mount Horeb School community believes that literacy in all forms
is the key to the academic and emotional development of our students.
Reading is the gateway to all literacy. The reading program in each
grade level is based on a balanced reading approach which places an
emphasis on identifying students' strengths while addressing their areas
of need. The overall goal is to promote skills and attitudes that will
enable students to mature into life long readers and learners. Our
excellent programs in math, science, and social studies promote content
specific literacy, emphasize higher level thinking, and make
developmentally appropriate connections across curriculum areas so
students experience learning in an integrated fashion. To support
overall literacy, we ask that all students read at home for at least 20
- 30 minutes each day.
We also emphasize the development of emotional literacy. More than
ever, it is critical that young children recognize and internalize the
integrity and value of basic character traits. In doing so, the school
community looks forward to working with families and stresses the six
pillars of character education:
1. Trustworthiness - Be honest. Do what you say you'll do and
have the courage to do the right thing.
2. Respect - Treat others with
respect. Use good manners and be considerate.
3. Responsibility - Do what
you're supposed to do.
4. Fairness - Play by the
rules, take turns and share.
5. Caring - Show you care about
others.
6. Citizenship - Do your part
to improve our school and community.
In stressing character education, it is essential that all adult
members of the school community, staff and parents, recognize that we
are role models for our children. We must remember that children learn
through observing us daily - it is essential that we model strong
character in the school setting and in our daily lives.
To further promote students' emotional literacy, we look forward to
emphasizing the district's RAISE Responsibility System. This system is
based on four basic levels of behavior:
Level A: Anarchy
Level B: Bullying/Bossing
Level C: Cooperation
Level D: Democracy
All students are expected to behave at Levels C and D. Students
will often be asked to identify at which level they are behaving and how
they must modify their behavior so it reaches an acceptable level of
behavior. This self-reflection process places responsibility for the
student's monitoring and evaluation concerning behavior with the child.
The adult acts as a facilitator to help the child make connections
between behavior, modification, and consequences.
The Mount Horeb School Staff looks forward to meeting the challenges
associated with emphasizing literacy development and educating children
in the 21st century. We constantly challenge ourselves
professionally, expand our understanding of how to best meet children's
individual needs, and strive to differentiate instruction so all
students work up to their own unique and individual abilities.
Sincerely,
William Kimmick
